Numec cleanup to take three years By SAM KUSIC Indiana Gazette April 27, 2009The Army Corps of Engineers is finalizing plans to clean up a low-level radioactive waste dump in Parks Township, Armstrong County, and will make them public in the coming weeks, according to a corps official. Project manager Bill Lenart said work on the $66 million project at the Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corp. dump site is to begin in August or September and will probably take three construction seasons to complete. Under the project, a contractor will dig up roughly 40,000 cubic yards of contaminated dirt at the site and ship it to a disposal facility. According to the Corps, the company, which processed nuclear fuel for commercial and military uses, buried radioactive waste in 10 trenches at the site between 1961 and 1970. The 44-acre site is along the banks of the Kiskiminetas River, just outside the village of Kiskimere. ...
