Efforts to cap Area B landfill sites to be completed in September By Ike Wilson Frederick news Post (MD) July 07, 2009After touring and being briefed about Fort Detrick's Area B on Monday, U.S. Sen. Benjamin Cardin, D-Md., said he was satisfied that work to remedy contaminated landfill sites was on course.
On June 24, the Maryland Department of the Environment announced it had approved plans to cap six landfill sites on Area B contaminated with biological waste, testing materials and chemical and herbicidal waste.
Capping the landfills will stop groundwater contamination, said Joseph Gortva, restoration manager for Fort Detrick.
"In this particular case, all of our waste is buried above groundwater," Gortva said.
The cap process is the gold standard for these kinds of operations, Gortva said.
