Air Force wrapping up Kelly transfer next year

The U.S. Air Force transferred another 72 acres at the former Kelly Air 
Force Base over to Port San Antonio last month.

Ever since the Department of Defense made the decision in 1995 to close 
Kelly as part of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) program, the 
government has been transferring several parcels of land over to the 
local redevelopment authority, Port San Antonio, for commercial reuse.

This marks the last transfer of land before the scheduled whole base 
transfer in 2010. So far, 80 percent of the property used when the base 
was active has been transferred to the local community.

The most recent parcel transferred to Port San Antonio is in what is 
known as Zone 2 and is bordered by Southwest Military Drive, Union 
Pacific Railroad and Leon Creek. Before the transfer could take place, 
the Air Force had to demonstrate that all clean-up actions required for 
the land by the EPA had been implemented and are operating properly.
