Pit of munitions, fluids found on base CAPE COD TIMES CAMP EDWARDS - A burial pit containing at least 75 inert munitions was discovered Monday in the southwest corner of Camp Edwards. The munitions, none of which contain high explosives, include 74 inert 3.5-inch rockets and one inert 66-millimeter rocket. The munitions were discovered during an investigation into several suspected burial sites in a former defense contractor test range and military training area. The range is above the central part of the aquifer that supplies water to Sandwich, Bourne, Falmouth and Mashpee. Because the discovery was within the radius of the Sandwich Neighborhood Buffer Zone, work stopped immediately, according to Christina Dolen, a spokeswoman for the Impact Area Groundwater Study Program. Dolen said the area was secured to make certain there is no risk to nearby residents.
