The Seoul City government plans to determine the cause of
contaminated springwater around Noksapyeong Station on subway line 6,
near the U.S. military base in Yongsan, Seoul, officials said yesterday.
"We will conduct drilling to find out what caused the watercontamination there," a city official said. "We will select a company to carry out the work by the end of the month and finish the probe by year-end." The city government is currently consulting with U.S. military =officials on the drilling. Once the location and the number of wells to be drilled are decided, the city plans to analyze the soil and rocks collected from the area and ascertain from which direction the oil is coming. A fuel leak is suspected of contaminating the underground spring. Seoul City discovered kerosene in the springwater near the station in January last year and April this year.
